Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about our Bluezero® Technology and the eChiller.

Water as a refrigerant is safe to operate, non-explosive, climate-neutral, non-toxic, freely available, cost-effective and oil-free. In addition, neither the EU F-Gas Regulation nor the German Water Resources Act apply when using water as a refrigerant.

The usage possibilities are ultimately dictated by the freezing point of water at 0°C. There are no upper limits for cooling capacities and temperatures. It should be noted, however, that economical usage is not possible below 12°C.

Water is particularly suitable as a refrigerant for applications such as industrial process cooling, comfort cooling, IT cooling, machine cooling, technical air conditioning, hygienic applications and foodstuffs.

As water is climate-neutral, a multiple of CO2equivalents can be saved compared to other synthetic refrigerants. The production, storage, disposal, recycling and transportation of the refrigerant are also avoided. This means that ultimately several tonnes of CO2 are saved over the entire lifecycle.

Water evaporates at atmospheric pressure at 100°C. The lower the pressure, the lower the evaporation temperature. To maximise the efficiency of the cooling process, the pressure is therefore reduced to a vacuum.

Conventional refrigeration systems have to comply with the relevant refrigeration directives (EN378, PED, …). Regular inspections are required to maintain the technical condition and to operate these systems safely. This is redundant for systems which use pure water. Low maintenance costs, no leakage tests, no specialist personnel, no expert needed to formally sign off leakage repairs, and uncomplicated and essentially cost-free transportation, purchasing and disposal. Moreover, the refrigerant does not need to be emptied when work is done on the refrigeration circuit.

No water is used at all, as the process runs in a closed system. The system is filled once with decalcified tap water (eChiller35/45: approx. 60 litres, eChiller120: approx. 80 litres).

Water used as a refrigerant only has to meet the requirements of the EC Drinking Water Directive. Our service technician decalcifies (softens) it during the commissioning of the eChiller. Rainwater is not suitable for filling the eChiller.

No, to survive and multiply bacteria also need oxygen which is not present in a vacuum.

Larger systems of the eChiller product family are being planned. Higher capacities can also be achieved by connecting several eChillers in parallel. Our Main-Assist control is used for this.

Systems with higher temperatures are being planned within the eChiller product family.

It should be noted that the eChiller35/45 may only be installed in closed, frost-free rooms no higher than 2,000 m above sea level. The floor must be level.

The eChiller35/45 enables very efficient free cooling (FC+ and FC). These operating modes are integrated and applied by the eChiller control.

The eChiller35/45 has a capacity range from 20 kW to 45 kW depending on the chilled water outlet temperature. The Main-Assist control also allows our systems to work in a cluster (of up to 10 machines).

The eChiller35/45 operates with a chilled water outlet temperature of between 12°C and 28°C. Please note, however, that the cooling water inlet temperature has a direct impact on operating efficiency and the chilled water outlet temperature. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our partner network. The maximum ambient operating temperature is 40°C.

Up to ten eChiller35/45s can be connected in parallel using the Main-Assist control.

In a cluster of several eChiller35/45s, the Main-Assist control units must be adjusted optimally for the change in capacity.

The eChiller35/45 must principally be transported on a level surface. It must be placed without any jolts in its final position in a level and frost-free environment.

The refrigerant is softened (decalcified) drinking water. Our service technician softens the drinking water during commissioning.

The eChiller uses online software which allows all parameters to be displayed visually. The machine is monitored rigorously and notifies of possible wear and tear early on. This enables predictive maintenance, making the machine very reliable.

The service life of our eChiller35/45 is consistent with the industry’s requirements and prevailing technical standards. Regular machine maintenance also contributes significantly to a long service life.

The machine is currently intended for frost-free areas (e.g. installation in a container).

As is the case for any conventional water-cooled chiller, the eChiller35/45 also needs to be re-cooled. If required, Efficient Energy can also supply or configure an optimally dimensioned re-cooler unit. Configuration details can be found in the technical data sheet.

Amongst others: IT air-conditioning, industrial process cooling (plastics industry), building air-conditioning, i.e. between 12°C and 28°C chilled water outlet temperature.

The eChiller35/45 cannot be currently used as a heat pump, but a medium-temperature heat pump is currently being worked on.

Yes. As standard, the eChiller35/45 has a hardware interface as well as a data interface for the Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP protocols. All other commonly used communication protocols are available optionally.

The eChiller35/45 has a clear advantage over conventional chillers in terms of CO2 emissions. The saving in terms of electricity consumption is between 40% and 60% depending on the underlying operating fundamentals. Costs can also be saved in the areas of safety technology, the fulfilment of official requirements and the time required for maintenance.

The eChiller35/45 is eligible for BAFA funding. Maximum funding is possible in combination with adiabatic cooling, hydraulics, piping and redundancy.

Each system is principally offered with remote access. This covers continuous monitoring of the performance and efficiency data which helps reduce regular maintenance to a minimum. But, even without remote access, the maintenance overheads are still very low compared to conventional chillers.

The eChiller35/45 can save approx. 40% to 60% energy compared to conventional chillers, and up to 80% compared to older installations.

Yes, Efficient Energy has been manufacturing the eChiller35/45 in Feldkirchen near Munich since late 2015 and it has been available as a series product since the start of 2016.

The eChiller35/45 can be purchased through Efficient Energy’s partner network.

Yes, delivery outside Germany is principally possible.

The eChiller120 has the following characteristics compared to the eChiller35/45:
– Three times the cooling capacity
– Higher pressure ratio (+25%)
– Greater efficiency (+25%)
– Higher power density per m2 (+36%)
– Free cooling is optionally available

It should be noted that the eChiller120 may only be installed in closed, frost-free rooms no higher than 2,000 m above sea level. The floor must be level.

The free cooling can be integrated optionally in the eChiller120’s footprint but is not included in the standard package.

The eChiller120 has a capacity range from 70 kW to 120 kW. The capacity depends on the chilled water outlet temperature. The Main-Assist control also allows our systems to work in a cluster (of up to 10 machines).

The eChiller120 operates with a chilled water outlet temperature of between 12°C and 28°C. Please note, however, that the cooling water inlet temperature has a direct impact on operating efficiency and the chilled water outlet temperature. The entire eChiller120 system is a newly developed product of Efficient Energy. Among other things, it incorporates the latest findings from the compressor development of the eChiller35/45 generation. Prior to market launch, the entire system underwent numerous laboratory and long-term tests at field customers which confirmed the reliability of the eChiller120

The service life of our eChiller120 is consistent with the industry’s requirements and prevailing technical standards. Regular machine maintenance also contributes significantly to a long service life.
